The Development of Social Media in Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the countries in the world that has the most population. With a population of around 200 million people, it is not wrong if many people call Indonesia a very potential market for the digital world.

Therefore, according to research conducted, there are around 88.1 million people who use the internet actively in Indonesia as their social media. The more Indonesia is literate with technology, the internet users in the country will continue to grow. The growing number of internet users in Indonesia, will also grow social media users in this country. Here is the development of Social Media in Indonesia.

  1. The hype of Friendster in 2008

It is a social media of 2000s era was so popular in America. Built by programmer Jonathan Abrams in 2002, Friendster is growing rapidly.

The report noted that no less than 115 million people in the world became Friendster members in 2008. In Indonesia, Friendster is the first popular social media trend. In addition to providing an opportunity for users to personalize their accounts, sending testimonials is also a mainstay feature of this social media.

  1. Indonesia Facebook and Twitter users in 2009 were sharply increased

The number of Facebook users in 2009 in Indonesia was increased by almost 700 percent since 2008. Similarly, Twitter users rose to 3,700 percent. Most users are those aged 15-39 years. Although Facebook has been launched in 2004 and Twitter in 2006, it seems that Indonesia has only known a lot of social media in 2008 to 2009. Until now, Facebook and twitter users in Indonesia have increased sharply.

However, the superiority of social media does not last long. Facebook, which at that time was crawling up, quickly attracted the hearts of internet users around the world. However, in 2011, this social media began to lose prestige and more abandoned users. In the same year, this social media changed and slid back as a game play site.

The development of social media in the modern era is very fast. Millions of users have joined various social media to date and every day there are so many new users who are increasing. According to E-Marketer research in 2012, the number of social media users has increased from 1.47 billion in 2012 to 1.73 billion in 2013. This is in line with the increase in internet users from 2.3 billion in 2012.

The development of the internet and social media is also felt in Indonesia, including Asia. According to the website of the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Indonesia has become a country ranked 4th in the world of social media usage for Facebook and 5th in the world for Twitter in 2013 and this rating is expected to continue to increase in the following years.

This survey was conducted by a marketing research firm, GlobalWeb Index. In a survey conducted in the fourth quarter of 2013, and published in January 2014, Facebook only had active user growth of 3 percent, while Instagram reached 23 percent.

However, despite only having little growth, Facebook penetration in developing countries was quite high. In 2014, it was also reported that many teenage users were starting to leave Facebook. Although the addition of active users is slower, Facebook remains the world’s number one social network in terms of account ownership (83 percent), active use (49 percent), and frequency of visits (56 percent of Facebook users enter this service more than once a day).

Cellphone (cellphone) users in the country reached 371.4 million users or 142 percent of the total population of 262 million. That is, the average of every population uses 1.4 cellular phones because one person sometimes uses 2-3 cell phone cards. While Indonesia’s urban population reaches 55 percent of the total population.

Internet users in Indonesia reached 132.7 million with penetration of around 51 percent of the population. Active social media users reached 106 million with penetration of around 40 percent, and active mobile social media users reached 92 million or around 35 percent of the population. If being compared to the January 2016 position, Indonesian mobile users increased by 14 percent. While for penetration using active social media increased by 34 percent, and penetration of mobile active social media users increased by 39 percent.

Those are the development of social media in Indonesia. It can be concluded that Indonesia becomes the most users of internet and social that grows rapidly year by year. Hopefully, this progress would give much benefit for the development of the country too.
