This information technology ranges from insignificant images on the walls of the cave, the laying of a milestone in the form of inscriptions, until the introduction of a world of information flow known as the internet.

1. Prehistoric period

In this period, human information and communication technology functions as a system for recognizing forms. They illustrated the information obtained, they described it on the walls of the cave about hunting and game animals.

At this time, people began to identified objects that exist around their neighborhood, then paint it on the wall of the cave where they lived. You may read also history of tourism in Bali

Though the beginning of the telegraph is intended to send messages related to the war that is very secret. Until then telegraph became its own inspiration find teleprinting and telegram that make it easier for people to communicate.

4. Telephone

The increasingly widespread telegraph technology makes people’s demand for telegraphs higher. It is the background of the emergence of telephon in Indonesia.

Although the phone has been discovered by alexander graham bell since 1876, in Indonesia itself a new phone is used after 6 years later. And the first location that gets the honor of getting a phone line is Gambir to Batavia. Since then, Indonesian communications has grown to this day.

5. Internet

The Internet in Indonesia originally started in the academic realm and hobby groups. The Internet was first developed by the United States Department of Defense in 1969 as a secret project. As a network, the Internet is simply a technology that connects one computer to another.

Another technology that forms the basis for what we know today as “the Internet” is the World Wide Web (www). Its a global electronic publication medium accessible via the Internet.

This latest technology was discovered only in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee. The World Wide Web is a medium that allows us to enjoy a variety of content in it such as pictures, photos, videos, newspapers, radio, to television. See also history of buddhism in Bali

In Indonesia, history of the Internet generally refers to the Merlyna Lim dissertation which he maintains at the University of Twente, Belada, @rchipelago Online: The Internet and Political Activism in Indonesia. Lim said, the Internet in Indonesia initially appeared in the academic realm.

The Internet network was originally a research project undertaken by researchers at the University of Indonesia. The first Internet connection in Indonesia was recorded by Joseph Luhukay in 1983 who developed the UINet (University of Indonesia Network) network at the University of Indonesia campus. Indonesia was listed as the first country in Asia connected to the global Internet network when the Luhukay developed UINet is officially connected to the global Internet network. It was still named UUNet in 1984.

Lim also noted, outside the world of campus, Onno Purbo recorded as the most influential figure in the development of Internet network in Indonesia. Together with his friends a hobby of amateur radio activity, Onno developed a computer network over radio frequencies in 1993.

Motivation Onno and his friends at that time was looking for a way to communicate cheaply outside Telkom’s network that time monopolized the telecommunications industry in Indonesia. Onno then published a number of articles on how to build a cheap telecommunications network over the Internet.

Furthermore, the development of the Internet in Indonesia which was originally a research and hobby activity shifted to the commercial sphere when PT Indo Internet (Indonet) stood as the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Indonesia in September 1994. After Indonet, until the end of 1990 stood a number of ISPs between PT Rahardjasa Internet (Radnet) (1995), Wasantara Network developed by PT Pos Indonesia (1996), IndosatNet (1996), and Telkomnet (1998).

In 1998, according to APJII (Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers) data of ISP customers throughout Indonesia was recorded at only 138,000 subscribers with an estimated 512,000 Internet users.

However, the emergence of a number of ISPs is not a significant factor that makes the Internet widespread in Indonesia.

The reason is that ISPs are only accessible to certain social groups in the community who own a computer and are able to pay the phone credit bill.

According to Lim, an important actor of Internet access deployment in the early years of Internet development in Indonesia was the widespread “internet cafe” in 1996.

The presence of Internet cafes makes the Internet more accessible because people pay enough hourly connection fees without the need for a computer or pay for home phone connection fees.
