9 Traditional Musical Instruments of South Sulawesi

South Sulawesi becomes one of the regions in Indonesia that is located on Sulawesi island. Just like another region in Sulawesi, this region has so many famous cultures in Indonesia that come from their variant tribes.

Since a long time ago, South Sulawesi persistent in keeping their original cultures includes their traditional musical instrument. If you ever visiting South Sulawesi, you will easily find some of their musical instrument there. That because some of them still exist until now even though the modern instrument reaches them.

So, let see some of them below!

1. Alosu

Alosu is a kind of musical instrument that comes from South Sulawesi which is made from a chosen wood. It integrates with the little bamboo then filled with some stones and wrapped properly with some textiles in white and red color.

Alosu sounds uniquely from the mixture of the stone and the bamboo. Commonly you can find these instruments in the Alosu traditional dance from South Sulawesi. People usually play it while some festivals happen as one of the ways how to preserve Indonesian culture.

2. Puik-Puik

Puik-Puik is a kind of musical instrument that comes from South Sulawesi which is made of solid metal. It looks similar to some trumpet in Indonesia, but it has two palm leaves at the corner of the body which you should blow to produce the sound.

Puik-Puik can be found in some traditional songs in South Sulawesi. People claims that play this instrument has a specific technique so that they think it difficult to play the instrument. If you are not an expert on it, the instrument may sound bad to hear or even doesn’t produce the sound ever.

3. Gesok-Gesok

Gesok-Gesok is one of the musical instruments that come from South Sulawesi, which is made of wood and animal leather. It looks similar to the common Rebab in Aceh and traditional Sundanese musical instruments.

Gesok-Gesok consists of the two strings attach and one of the swipe sticks. The body of this instrument has a heart form as the representation that you should play it by the heart feels to produce a good sound.

Gesok-Gesok can be easily found at some traditional events such as the traditional music of Indonesia which consists of poems. Commonly it following the poem which has so many wisdom of pearls.

4. Pa’pompang

Pa’pompang is one of the traditional musical instruments of South Sulawesi that comes from the Torajan tribe. It is made from bamboo and you should blow it to produce the sound. It has a higher melody that perfect for following some South Sulawesinese traditional songs.

Commonly Pa’pompang plays in some songs when the people pray in the Church regularly. It is also played in some events such as the wedding or welcoming guest in both local or government events.

5. Talindo

Talindo is a kind of traditional musical instrument of South Sulawesi that is made from the chosen wood and coconut shell. It is attached by the strings as the swipe resonator to produce a perfect sound. You should swipe the string properly or it won’t be sound ever.

Talindo is usually played by the individual player which commonly plays to following some traditional South Sulawesinese songs. This instrument used to play by some farmers after they finish their work in the rice field or to celebrate the harvest.

6. Ana Bacing

Ana Bacing is one of the traditional musical instruments from South Sulawesi that made from a chosen zinc. It is built perfectly with the form like an arrow which should be played by punch between one and another Ana Bacing.

Ana Bacing used to play for specific kingdom events, but as time goes by everyone can enjoy this instrument on every song. Commonly, it plays to following the Bissu traditional dance in that perform in some events.

You can find Ana Bacing in some wedding events, the inauguration of the king, funerals includes the unique death ritual in Indonesia, harvest time, and many more.

7. Jalappa

Jalappa is a kind of South Sulawesi traditional musical instrument made of good metal material. You should punch it between one Jalapp and another to produce a good sound.

Jalappa is similar to some Javanese musical instrument, which is made of the same metal, but it is formed as the button size. Some South Sulawesinese also call it the Kancing-Kancing.

Jalappa usually plays for the wedding event, Khitanan, refuse some reinforcements ritual, or even for offering to worship their ancient God in some South Sulawesinese rituals.

8. Basi-Basi

Basi-Basi is a traditional musical instrument from South Sulawesi that is made of bamboo. In the Bugis tribe, they call it the Basi-Basi but the form in Makassar people usually call it the clarinet. That because it looks similar to the clarinet and the sound also sounds similarly.

Basi-Basi should be played by blowing the part of its body with a specific technique. You can find in it some traditional song of South Sulawesi.

9. Kacaping

Kacaping is one of the traditional musical instruments that come from the Bugis tribe. It looks similar to the common Kecapi in Indonesia which you should play by picking it up the string properly.

People usually play Kacaping with some singer so that it is perfect to hear. You can find these instruments in some important even in South Sulawesi.

So, there are some glances about traditional musical instruments of South Sulawesi that you should know. Most of them are still exist now even though modern instruments reach them.
