8 Endangered Animals in Eastern Indonesia

Have you ever heard that animals in Eastern Indonesia have some different types from the ones from animals in Western Indonesia? Most of them are categorized as an animal that is influenced by Australian species.

Animals in Eastern Indonesia cover some animals from the region of Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara Islands, Bali, Maluku, and Papua. Those islands consist of many species of animals living including the endemic animals that only live there.

You can find some types of animals in Eastern Indonesia of any species, such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. If you are wondering where you can meet one of them, let’s see some of the lists below!

1. Black Macaque

The black macaque is one of the animals in Eastern Indonesia that is categorized as endemic mammal species from Sulawesi. This type of animal is one family with orang-utan and monkey but has a different species.

Black macaque has a unique color of black all over their body with a thicker fur. They also have a black crest that lay on top of their head, which makes them unique from other types of mammals that live around the Indonesian rainforest endangered species.

You can find black macaque in some of the Tangkoko National Park in North Sulawesi. The island becomes the house of these endangered animals in Eastern Indonesia that have a conservatory area to prevent them from the extinct.

2. Pygmy Tarsius

Pygmy Tarsius is one of the most popular animals in Eastern Indonesia that you can find only in Tangkoko National Park in North Sulawesi. This primate is one of the primate species with the smallest size of their body on earth. It becomes one of the unusual animals in Indonesia.

Pygmy Tarsius commonly has only 75-165 grams of weight, 85-150 mm in size, and a long tail of around 135-275 mm. They live in the tree and jump from one to another tree to get their food.

Nowadays, pygmy Tarsius is one of the most endangered animals in Eastern Indonesia so they live in the conservatory area with other species such as the black Macaque in North Sulawesi.

3. Maleo

Maleo is a type of bird species that live as the only endemic animal in eastern Indonesia specifically on Sulawesi Island. You can find them in some of the Lore Lindu National Park.

Commonly Maleo has only size around 55 cm of their body with the black color of their feathers and a bit orange around their stomach. As one of the most endangered animals in Indonesia, they live in the forest and couldn’t fly high like other types of common birds.

Nowadays, Maleo is one of the most endangered animals in Eastern Indonesia. That is why most of them live around the conservatory area in Sulawesi.

4. Lowland Anoa

Lowland Anoa is one of the most popular animals in Eastern Indonesia that you can find around Sulawesi and Buton Island. This type of most endangered mammal in Indonesia is one of the most popular endemic species from Sulawesi.

Lowland Anoa is a type of buffalo with the smallest size of their body. Most of them live around the forest of the lowland area, near the rivers, and along the seashore.

Nowadays this species becomes one of the most endangered animals in Eastern Indonesia. That is why most of them are living in the conservatory area.

5. Babirusa

The babirusa is one of the most endangered animals in Eastern Indonesia after Anoa. Just like Anoa, Babirusa is one of the endemic species from Sulawesi that live around Togian Island, Malenge, Sula, Buru, and Maluku.

Babirusa commonly lives in a group and eats everything such as leaves, mushrooms, larva, and even fruits. They have a unique horn that makes them different from the common forest pig.

6. Jalak Bali

Jalak Bali is one of the most beautiful starlings on earth that live as the Balinese endemic birds. This type of bird is one of the animals in Eastern Indonesia that lately become endangered of their limited species.

Jalak Bali is one of the native animals in Bali that has unique white fur all over their body with the blue color of their eye and a bit black of their tail. You can find them in the West Bali National Park, which is commonly flown in a group or couples.

Most of Jalak Bali can find in Savana, swamp forests, and mangrove forests. Most of them live in that conservatory area to prevent extinction.

7. Komodo Dragons

Komodo dragons are one of the most popular animals in Eastern Indonesia that live around the Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara. They live in a conservatory area of the Komodo National Park.

Komodo dragons are the only dragon species living in East Nusa Tenggara as their endemic dragon. They become the biggest lizard living on earth that couldn’t live far away from their home.

The unique fact about Komodo dragons is that even their place in the longest area from their home, they will back instinctively to their homeland. Pretty impressive, aren’t they?

8. Bird of Paradise

Bird of Paradise is one of the most beautiful animals in Eastern Indonesia that you can find in West Papua. More specifically, they live around the Teluk Cenderawasih National Park.

Bird of Paradise is one of the only endemic bird species that live in West Papua. Commonly locals call them the bird of Cendrawasih since most of them only live in the Cenderawasih gulf in West Papua.
