Traffic jam has been the most problematic issue in developing countries including Indonesia.

It is not surprising because cities with the worst traffic in Indonesia are the capital city of each province. 

A study held by Traffic Scorecard resulted in the traffic jam in particular times impact in different areas. Traffic jam on the whole day may seriously influence business sectors. 

Here are ten cities with the worst traffic in Indonesia. You should better be careful and prepared if you want to visit these cities. 

1. Jakarta

As the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta holds a lot of burdens. In 2017, this city became the twelfth city with the worst traffic in the world!

It was getting worse compared to the 2016 traffic when it ranked on the twenty-second. 

The time spent on the street can reach sixty-three hours in a year! The traffic’s percentage in this city is twenty-four percent during rush hour, and twenty-one percent when it is normal. 

2. Bandung

The length of hours spent as drivers in Bandung is up to 46 hours. This city that became a movie set for one of the best Indonesian romance movies, Dilan 1990, has a higher percentage of a traffic jam than Jakarta. 

As the capital city of West Java, Bandung has twenty-seven percent during rush hour, and twenty-four percent outside the hours.

This percentage brings Bandung becomes the city with the worst traffic in Indonesia. 

Asian Development Bank (ADB) released a report informed that Bandung ranks on the fourteenth position as city with the worst traffic in Asia. Compared to Jakarta, it holds the seventeenth place in that report. 

3. Malang

Known as the Switzerland Van Java, this city was not designed to be a big city during the Dutch colonialization. 

However, as the second biggest city in East Java, Malang overcomes its capital city, Surabaya. 

The drivers must spend forty-five hours on the street per year with an average percentage of twenty-three percent. Yet, it can increase to twenty-seven percent during the rush hours. 

4. Yogyakarta

The number of universities in this city may become the reasons why Yogyakarta called “Kota Pelajar”.

Consequently, it accommodates 3,8 million of people and makes Yogyakarta become the fourth city in Indonesia with the worst traffic. 

The hours that drivers spend in this city is equal to Malang, forty-five hours per year.

In normal hours, the percentage will be twenty-four percent, and twenty-six to twenty-seven percent during the rush hours.

5. Padang

Even though this city has incredible facts about Padang Indonesia such as the delicious cuisine, the most luxurious school in the country, and its amazing waterfalls, Padang becomes the fifth city with the worst traffic in Indonesia. 

Being the capital city of West Sumatra province and the largest city on the west coast of Sumatra Island, Padang becomes one of the dreamlands for people who want to improve the quality of their life. In 2010, there are 833,562 people who live in Padang. 

Forty-five hours is how much time people spend their life in a year on the road.

During the rush hour, it has twenty-nine percent of traffic, while during the normal hours the percentage is twenty-four percent. 

6. Medan

Situated on the same island as Padang, Medan is the sixth city in Indonesia that has the worst traffic.

It happens because many industries build their factory in Medan. As a result, bad traffic jams cannot be avoided. 

In Medan, people spend forty-two hours on the street with an average percentage of twenty percent.

In normal hours, it holds twenty-three percent of the traffic. Meanwhile, the percentage grows into twenty-five percent during rush hour. 

7. Pontianak

The next city with the worst traffic is Pontianak. Pontianak is the capital city of West Kalimantan.

This city, which has unique traditions in Indonesia during Eid Al Fitr, is the seventh city with the worst traffic in Indonesia. People are trapped in traffic for forty hours each year. 

Famous for its long-hair female ghost, Pontianak has twenty-four percent of traffic during the rush hour. Normally, the percentage is one percent below it. 

8. Surabaya

Surabaya is one of the famous cities in Indonesia. Contrastingly, it is also the eighth city in Indonesia that has the worst traffic.

As it is mentioned, becoming the capital city of East Java province makes this city has a problematic issue in handling the traffic. 

Becoming the second biggest city in Indonesia, Surabaya has sixteen percent of traffic rate and thirty-seven hours people spend on the road each year.

The growth of industry and property in this city can be the strong reason why it becomes one of the cities in Indonesia with the worst traffic.
