13 Most Common Food in Bali with Authentic Taste

When visiting Bali, it’s not complete if you don’t taste the local cuisine. Some people even fall in love with Bali not because of the beach, but with some very special Balinese food menus. Bali is a paradise for foodies, where you can find very unique foods that you will not find anywhere in the world. For that, there is nothing wrong for you to try Balinese food while you stay there. Here are a few of most common food in Bali you will find when visiting there.

  1. Babi Guling

Although not everyone cannot eat Babi Guling because it is non-halal food, this food is the main culinary destination for Balinese and local tourists. The brownish color of Babi Guling skin is really crunchy. Moreover, the meat is so tender and rich in spices.

Uniquely, Balinese genep spices and cassava leaf vegetables are added to the pork belly and rolled over coals. The Babi Guling menu is usually served with warm white rice with lawar, satay wrap, and a small bowl of jukut ares.

  1. Sate Lilit

Sate Lilit is different. When the meat in other satay  is stabbed, Sate Lilit is instead made by wrapped the meat around. Previously, the meat was finely chopped and mixed with Balinese spices. Then, wrap it around the stems of lemongrass or bamboo stalks. The meat will taste so soft and tasty. What’s more, on a satay cone that uses the stems of lemongrass leaves, you will smell a delicious scent.

In general, the meat ithat s used in Sate Lilit includes chicken, pork, or mackerel. However, it is the Sate Lilit made of mackerel fish that is the favorite in Bali.

  1. Lawar

Lawar is a mixture of vegetables and minced meat which is specially made using Balinese spices. Generally Lawar is processed using a mixture of pork, but it turns out that Muscovy duck is also an alternative meat that is favored by the Balinese people.

Usually the chopped Muscovy duck meat will be mixed with pieces of long bean and grated coconut and covered with Balinese spices. Lawar Kuwir will be more enjoyable if eaten with warm white rice with satay wrap, peanuts, shredded Ayam Betutu, and a bowl of jukut ares (banana stem vegetables).

  1. Serombotan

If there are famous salads in western countries and in Java it is very synonymous with Sayur Urap, Bali is no less synonymous with the typical vegetable culinary called Serombotan. This Klungkung culinary serves a mixture of vegetables such as long beans, spinach, kale, beans, round eggplants, bean sprouts, and bitter melon.

Meanwhile the marinade is known as Kalas, which is a kind of coconut milk containing a mixture of mashed turmeric, galangal, onion, garlic, coriander and galingale. This spice is combined again with peanut spices and spicy spices.

  1. Tipat Blayag

The shape of Tipat Blayag is not wrestled like a square diamond, but is more like a lontong wrapped around lengthwise with young coconut or young palm leaves. Unlike tipat cantok which uses peanut spices, Blayag has spices derived from processed rice flour and Balinese spices.

The texture of the marinade which is very thick like coconut milk is very delicious when it comes to the pieces of blayag, vegetable urab, chicken sisit, fried chicken claw, chicken skin crackers, and soybeans.

  1. Nasi Jinggo

The uniqueness of Nasi Jinggo is that the packaging is wrapped in banana leaves plus a super spicy sauce. The rice is served as big as an adult’s hand, while the side dishes generally consist of shredded chicken meat, fried noodles, and fried tempeh. You will not feel full by only eating a pack of Nasi Jinggo.

No one knows for certain the meaning of the term Jinggo (Jenggo), but it is said to come from the Hokkien jeng go language which means one thousand and five hundred. Indeed, in 1997, when the rice was becoming popular, it was priced at Rp. 1,500, but now it is sold on average in the range of Rp. 3,000 – Rp. 5,000.

  1. Nasi Tepeng

Nasi Tepeng is a typical food from Gianyar which is served as soft as mush. It is complemented by a mixture of Balinese spices that are poured over the Tepeng. No wonder the spicy taste is effective to shake the tongue.

Long beans, red beans, young jackfruit, eggplants, moringa leaves, and grated coconut are some vegetables that often complement the Rice Tepeng. While for the side dishes there are usually eggs and shredded fried chicken. The way of serving is unique, namely by using banana leaves.

  1. Ayam Betutu

Ayam Betutu is flavored with spices with a very spicy texture. Uniquely, the spices are put into the inside of the chicken’s stomach. Then the meat is wrapped in banana leaves and baked using husk fire embers which take up to 24 hours, so that it can produce an authentic savory, soft and spicy flavor. In addition, Betutu does not always use chicken meat.

There are also those who use ducks. This what makes people who come to Bali are always looking for this Balinese cuisine.

  1. Rujak Kuah Pindang

If you don’t know what is Rujak, it is a popular meal in Indonesia. It usually made of some chops of various fruit with sweet spicy sauce.

Rujak in Bali is not the same as rujak in general, because this rujak is a rujak made from pindang gravy.   1. Sate Lembat

Indonesia is famous for its satay.  It also happens in Bali. Besides Sate Lilit, Sate Lembat is also a popular menu of traditional Balinese food. It because its authentic taste that makes everyone loves it.

Moist satay is made from crushed meat and mixed with grated coconut with a mixture of spices. Variations of meat commonly used are pork and chicken. Nowadays a lot of satay is served in various restaurants in Bali.

Lempet is a kind of side dish made from sea fish, tuna or tuna, plus spices, packed with banana leaves and baked on coconut shell coals. This stick is generally called the message (pepes). If pepes in Indonesia usually steamed in the stove, this food is manually baked on the fire.

Sate lilit, suwiran chicken sisit Basa Genep Bali, vegetable urap, and chicken lawar ready to be eaten to accompany warm white rice. Eating Rice Mix will be more delicious, when you mix it with matah sauce or Balinese embe sauce.

Interestingly, this menu always appears with a variety of dishes in each restaurant in Bali, for example, there are those serving betutu chicken, tomato sambal eggs, fried chicken skin, spicy tuber leaves, pindang fish, as well as sprinkling of fried peanuts.
